My Story

It all began when my parents built us a library the size of the lounge room, and then went about filling it with books from wall to wall.

And really I should have known that something was up when I began my nursing degree, and the paper I loved the most was Communication 101. When I had my first child 20 years ago, I left my nursing career, and took up an English degree extramurally. The degree became my one measurable achievement in amongst the (cloth!) nappies and the fog of sleeplessness. While bringing up my three daughters, and working in a public library, I took every writing paper I could through Massey. From travel writing, creative non-fiction, to speech and feature writing, I honed in on adverbs and superlatives, learnt about story arcs and a poem’s emotional centre, and I began to fall for the craft of writing.

Now, a graduate of the Whitireia Graduate Certificate in Editing, I work with words for a living — mostly editing, but I also write creative non-fiction and poetry. I have been running my own editing business for the last six years and during this time I have done some amazing projects. I love the exchange between author and editor, and the process of taking something from rough draft right through to completion, and most of all, I love helping others bring their words, stories and ideas to life.

I have a special interest in health and education editing. My focus on these fields harks back to growing up in the bush behind the small settlement of Opononi in the Hokianga, and seeing first-hand the impact that a good teacher and a functional health system can have on the individual, family and community. My interest in these areas is also strongly informed by my tribal affiliations with Ngapuhi and Te Rarawa iwi.

I live with my husband and three daughters on the coast of Hawke’s Bay. If I’m not at my desk, you’ll likely find me in my garden tending my roses or veges, walking the trails of Te Mata Peak, or with my head buried in a New Yorker magazine trying to forget about the dinner.
